Hanging Lamp

Project: Create a Unique Hanging Lamp

With the only restriction being the housing for the light, we had 10 weeks to create a unique hanging lamp, with whatever materials we saw fit.

Development

My design was supposed to depict a pair of hands. This then transitioned into a more abstract, geometric version, which I went forward with for my final working model and render.

Initial concepts started as sketch models, and was subsequently transitioned into Rhino. I loosely based aspects like the fingers on my own hand. I was considering doing the whole structure 3D printed, but after several failed prints, I made the main base with a 3D printer, and used the laser cutter for the fingers. My fingers would be cut from foam core, with two layers for each component.

Creation

After the base had been printed and the fingers cut, prep began. I did some sanding to the base to give it a nice surface for the basecoat. For the fingers, I only had to glue each layer per piece. After each respective aspect was ready, I glued everything together. From there, I did about 5 coats of paints, as to reach each respective crevasse and service.

Some challenges I faced definitely had to due to logistics. Painting differing surfaces made painting a but difficult, since one surface would take longer to dry, which meant I had to wait longer overall. of course, the issue of 3D printing failures also didn’t help, as getting one good model really pushed my timetable.

Completion

After an array of of base iterations, and adjustments to finger shape, I came to my final design, which I was able to submit by its due date. Additionally, I was able to have it displayed in the Walla Walla University Design Showcase.

If I had to change anything, I think it would be how I arranged my time. Ideally, the base and fingers are made out of the same materials, even if they are separate parts. It would definitely make aspects like finishing and texture consistent.

Regardless, I believe the outcome was satisfactory and it utilized a variety of skills that I had learned from my courses.
